Description

Paint from a live model while learning the classical Bistre underpainting technique. Students will explore portrait composition, improve observational drawing skills, and learn to mix natural, lifelike skin tones in oil paint.
 
Felicia will demonstrate each step of the process, providing individualized guidance, feedback, and critique throughout the workshop. Live model classes are a rare opportunity—join us to strengthen your portrait painting skills while working from direct observation.
 

Please see the student material list below:

  • Oil paints, either traditional or water mixable (if using water mixable, Winsor and Newton Artisan brand is best)  

  • Suggested colors (if new to painting): Titanium white, alizarin crimson, cadmium red light, cadmium yellow light, phthalo green, ultramarine blue, ivory black 

  • Brushes: various sizes in round and filbert shapes (you may want to get a mixture of natural hog bristle hair and synthetic)  

  • Palette knife, medium size (T17) 

  • 2 small glass jars or palette cups for mediums 

  • Linseed oil (Artisan or water mixable if using water mixable oils)  

  • Odorless mineral spirits (best is Gamsol) ONLY if using traditional oils 

  • Canvas boards or any surface you can safely use oil paints on 

Note: Registering for this class requires a $45 registration fee. This is a yearly fee and will cover all classes registered for Fall 2025, as well as Spring and Summer 2026. If you've already paid the fee for the 25-26 schoolyear, you will not be charged this fee again.
